I used IDEA StatiCa to perform a peer review on the connections for a 38m tall timber arches spanning over 38m. IDEA StatiCa allowed me to analyse these connections in detail, identifying areas in the connections with had higher stresses than others. IDEA StatiCa played a crucial role in ensuring robust and efficient connections for this unique structure. This project had a tight deadline making it impractical to make manual hand calculations. IDEA StatiCa allowed us to quickly model each of the connections and review the capacities of bolts, welds, and other components in the connection.

We primarily use IDEA StatiCa for steel connection design, particularly complex steel connections. Prior to that, we had to rationalize complex connections into a more simplified approach. I started using IDEA StatiCa in 2019. I like the introduction of the prequalified connections so you don’t have to check and model everything because everything is already in the program. For me, the biggest advantage of IDEA StatiCa is the link from other design softwares such as STAAD and ETABS. And I find it convenient because of the directionality of stresses such as forces in XYZ and bending along strong and weak axis. What makes it is interesting and powerful is the ability to be flexible in what type of connection you are going to use and to modify the connection. In other softwares, you are only using 2-4 connections. But in IDEA StatiCa, you can add the bracing within the joint, especially if you are designing brace-frame structure, you can add the joint, the beam, everything and then you can see how to differentiate between the load combinations.

I worked on the Sydney Football Stadium where I was the lead of the roof design. What I find quite useful about IDEA StatiCa is that it is quite a rapid tool. Once you have templates set up, it is really quick to pull the same sort of design on different applications and get pretty quick results that are accurate. Basically, to do a similar thing in a finite element analysis software takes a fair bit of time. But in IDEA StatiCa, it is actually quite quick.

We used IDEA StatiCa Connection for the design of DELTABEAM endplates, the design of stiffeners of complicated joints, and splicing connections of steel sections.
Maybe the most important feature and also the reason why we purchased IDEA StatiCa Connection is the design of bolted endplates. With the CBFEM calculation method, we are able to optimize the thickness of plates. That is very useful for us because such an endplate is almost impossible to design based on EC design code. This method takes into account the real „behavior“ of the endplate, which means, e.g., increase of forces in bolts due to prying effects, which is a correct assumption.
